Technical Tests and Getting it Back Up – Domino Grey @ The Trash bar August 2013

Technical Tests and Getting it Back Up

Domino Grey @ The Trash Bar, Brooklyn NY August 19th 2013

Domino Grey at The Trash bar

Domino Does Despite…

And so, I was invited by Lev to join the line up at The Trash bar in Brooklyn New York. I performed there before and had a real good time. The last show’s set up was based on two iPads running IK Multimedia’s DJ Rig combined with their iRig MIX as the soundcard, connected to the house system.

IK Multimedia DJ Rig

iPads pad the set up.

Before that, I used a NI’s Traktor Kontrol S2, but never played out with it. I wanted to do more of a live performance showcase and steer away from a traditional DJ set up. My current rig is a touchscreen running Traktor 2.6 combined with The Z1 mixer, F1 and X1 controllers.

Touching set up

After watching Lev, Gem Uriah Star and Born Wreckless perform, I started to set up. No Power! The USB hub (that connects everything!) burned out on stage. Now what? I actually have doubles and redundancy for every part of the show and I keep every kind of adapter and spare bit you can imagine- I even have several versions of the show in case I run into some kind of software–related issue. But this was totally unexpected. The soundman Kam used testers and discovered the hub had melted. Real tight moment. I mean, those controllers are 95% of my show. To his credit, DJ SpacelyRockit [@SpacelyRockit] did tell me to bring an ENTIRE secondary set-up just in case. Well this show was a little more important than most because I was having clips filmed to be used in upcoming videos. Even so, I figured that was paranoid thinking. Ouch. I had two choices; A) Pack up and go home and maybe figure there’s some kind of meaning in this disaster and just prepare better next time or B) Do a scaled down show and stick to blending records and a traditional playlist-driven DJ work. I chose B and see it as the right decision to make, now that I’m looking back.

I ended up performing and started with a traditional DJ set; playing a bunch of my releases and a lot of songs from the recent Butterfly Affects series. For the live work, I ended up running off the tablet’s battery and only using the Z1 mixer. I brought a wireless mouse and keyboard as a worse-case-scenario in case the touchscreen failed and ended up using them to pull off a good portion of my live routine. The crowd enjoyed it and I secured future bookings. All in all, it was a good night and I learned another valuable lesson. A few people said they would have packed up and gone home, but that’s simply not an option. I likened this experience to a boxer getting knocked down for the first time. It’s good for me to know that I can get it back up. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported me.

Interview with Domino Grey – Dance or Move In Natural Order Domino Grey Middle Tennessee Music

Domino Grey = Dance or Move In Natural Order Generate Rhythmic Energy Yourself

Domino Grey sat down to talk to us about his influences, the many aliases he releases music under, and his new masterpiece, Butterfly Affect Part 1: Facial Recognition Technology.

The Butterfly flies

I understand the concept of fake it till you make it, but I think a lot of us are sliding towards the faking it becoming all that it’s about. —Domino Grey

Let’s break the ice. Who are you? Where are you from? What style of music do you create?

Domino Grey is a New York music producer who creates under several aliases, across multiple genres. His influences range from Electronica to Hip Hop.

Domino Grey is a really dope acronym (Dance or Move In Natural Order Generate Rhythmic Energy Yourself). What inspired it?

That’s the nerd-scientist in me. Everything has to stand for something and have meaning. My Domino is about inter-locking styles and elements like you would see playing the game Dominos. The greyness relates to an inexact approach. I slide around somewhere between all the rules and music formulas. I try and make that my approach to life too. Most people call this balance in all things.

Your music has this depth to it that is hard to explain. What inspires your creation process? What other music do you listen to or draw inspiration from?

I love science, science fiction, experimentation and exploration. I love movie soundtracks- where the music and sound effects merge into one. That’s done in movies like Blade Runner, Star Trek and even Apocalypse Now. Also, I like when music tells a story. Anything epic and grand will inspire me.

New Year’s A New Year – music from Domino Grey

New Music from Domino Grey “New Year’s A New Year”

Album Artwork Domino Grey New Year's A New Year

New music with a message

Domino Grey and Michael from RadioWaves.US present a special message for the New Year. Vocal edit and instrumental available plus bonus Happy New Year song.

“Hello everyone. This is Michael from RadioWaves.US with Domino Grey. Now that New Years has passed and a NEW YEAR is upon us, I’d like to share some important thoughts about your next 365 days.

We use New Years as a marker of hope to bring sweeping CHANGES to our lives. Too often, we find ourselves dreaming of a better life
Most of us dream about becoming rich and draw up lofty plans and ideas about how to change our cash flow. A more realistic goal is to IMPROVE our finances by monitoring how much we spend and what we spend it on. Consider where your money goes and even where it comes from and make improvements. Eliminating foolish spending on disposable items and empty entertainment can go a long way to improving your month to month budget.

We hope to change our relationships by changing people. We see ourselves as operating in the right and everyone else that doesn’t agree, operating in the wrong. That’s a very black and white way to look at our friends and partners. Consider the idea that in-between the Black and White, there is Grey.

Disagreements and stalemates occur when we find ourselves arguing to be right, instead of sharing our ideas and concepts. We never need to change what makes our relationships special, but we can improve them by remembering why people were accepted into our lives.

And lastly, we all want to change the shape of our bodies, but how about improving our health instead? Instead of looking in a mirror and waiting for change, you can look in your kitchen and see the improvement. Choosing to eat better is choosing to live better. It’s not about working out but working out a balanced life of responsible eating and exercise.

This is Michael from RadioWaves.US with Domino Grey wishing you a productive and safe year.”

Purchase this music directly from AVXP Music.  Also available on iTunes, Beatport and wherever fine music is sold.

Domino Grey is a child of rhythm- born from the Organic Electronic. The mixture of our Past and Future presents us with a sonic footprint- a quiet moment in time when silence expressed our deepest emotions and music was the only word spoken. These are cascading thoughts falling across a canvass of sound. Use these new colors to illustrate your imagination. Please touch the walls and leave behind the fingerprints as evidence of your existence.
