 Fallout Shelter

Four music producers decide to combine forces and create music under the name Fallout Shelter. They are Dynamics Plus (from the Lenzmen rap group), Drew Spence (from Producer’s Edge Magazine), Xodus Phoenix (instrumentalist) and Domino Grey (electronic music producer). These are instrumentals and beats designed for your listening pleasure. We only wish regular Elevator Music was so groovy.

Fallout Shelter Going Down album cover

Going Down is getting up

“…by the end of the second listen I had begun memorizing lines and was swaying to the beats. Every track has a surprise at every corner, each song brings something new to the table rhythmically. There is also very good things to say about the actual production of the album as well.”

It isn’t too often that we’re requested to review an instrumental Hip-Hop album, but it is something I enjoy. Getting the chance to listen to something new and different to change the daily routine is always nice.

Prior to listening to this album for review I had never listened to Fallout Shelter, so at first listen I was very critical, however by the end of the second listen I had begun memorizing lines and was swaying to the beats. Every track has a surprise at every corner, each song brings something new to the table rhythmically. There is also very good things to say about the actual production of the album as well. It’s not my favorite genre to listen to, however it was a very well put-together album and I’d suggest it to any of my friends who listen to hip-hop.

Soundlooks interview with Domino Grey

Domino Grey

It Feels Right to end the Butterfly Affect Series

With the release of his latest E.P. Boxing The Girl, Domino Grey reaches the end of his Butterfly Affect Series.

This arc of music includes instrumentals that swing from pure listening vibes to house-inspired party tracks. We sit down with this electronic artist and pick his brain over the latest releases.

Where did the obsession with butterflies come from and what does it all mean?

I wouldn’t say obsessed. It’s just the overall umbrella idea that I had everything fall under. Butterfly into caterpillar- everyone gets that. People changing over time…deciding to see yourself as you are and not through the eyes of others… The affect instead of effect, because I’m talking about how these thoughts influence our self-image and self-esteem. If you think you’re a caterpillar, you will crawl instead of fly.

But the goal is to make dance music, isn’t it? To be a part of that scene…

Well yes and many find it strange that I’d try to inject meanings and metaphors into music where- making them move is the main motive. But not every song is weighed down in deep thought or me trying to impart some kind of message. Sometimes it’s just in the liner notes. Sometimes it’s just one track and the rest are straight cuts. I party too.

The big idea for Boxing The Girl is a long, rambling message from a girl in a bit of trouble. What’s the story behind that?

I always pull my song ideas from real-life events. Usually I clean them up and make them universal enough so that everyone can relate without exposing anyone too much. We have all gotten or left an embarrassing or somewhat compromising series of messages. It’s just that no one usually saves them and slaps them on top of some music.

New York Comic Con is the largest pop culture event on the East Coast.

We went we say, wee took pictures, video and bought stuff. Sam Duren held down the images as we covered the main floor and took in the sites and sounds of Comic Con 2013 in New York @ The Jacob Javits Center. Awesome event, had lots of fun. I reeled up the vid and dropped some Domino Grey tracks behind it. Thanks to everyone who came out and supported and helped make this a great event.

Technical Tests and Getting it Back Up – Domino Grey @ The Trash bar August 2013

Technical Tests and Getting it Back Up

Domino Grey @ The Trash Bar, Brooklyn NY August 19th 2013

Domino Grey at The Trash bar

Domino Does Despite…

And so, I was invited by Lev to join the line up at The Trash bar in Brooklyn New York. I performed there before and had a real good time. The last show’s set up was based on two iPads running IK Multimedia’s DJ Rig combined with their iRig MIX as the soundcard, connected to the house system.

IK Multimedia DJ Rig

iPads pad the set up.

Before that, I used a NI’s Traktor Kontrol S2, but never played out with it. I wanted to do more of a live performance showcase and steer away from a traditional DJ set up. My current rig is a touchscreen running Traktor 2.6 combined with The Z1 mixer, F1 and X1 controllers.

Touching set up

After watching Lev, Gem Uriah Star and Born Wreckless perform, I started to set up. No Power! The USB hub (that connects everything!) burned out on stage. Now what? I actually have doubles and redundancy for every part of the show and I keep every kind of adapter and spare bit you can imagine- I even have several versions of the show in case I run into some kind of software–related issue. But this was totally unexpected. The soundman Kam used testers and discovered the hub had melted. Real tight moment. I mean, those controllers are 95% of my show. To his credit, DJ SpacelyRockit [@SpacelyRockit] did tell me to bring an ENTIRE secondary set-up just in case. Well this show was a little more important than most because I was having clips filmed to be used in upcoming videos. Even so, I figured that was paranoid thinking. Ouch. I had two choices; A) Pack up and go home and maybe figure there’s some kind of meaning in this disaster and just prepare better next time or B) Do a scaled down show and stick to blending records and a traditional playlist-driven DJ work. I chose B and see it as the right decision to make, now that I’m looking back.

I ended up performing and started with a traditional DJ set; playing a bunch of my releases and a lot of songs from the recent Butterfly Affects series. For the live work, I ended up running off the tablet’s battery and only using the Z1 mixer. I brought a wireless mouse and keyboard as a worse-case-scenario in case the touchscreen failed and ended up using them to pull off a good portion of my live routine. The crowd enjoyed it and I secured future bookings. All in all, it was a good night and I learned another valuable lesson. A few people said they would have packed up and gone home, but that’s simply not an option. I likened this experience to a boxer getting knocked down for the first time. It’s good for me to know that I can get it back up. Thanks to everyone that came out and supported me.
